Abstract

The thesis entitled “The roles of good children according to Buddhist teachings in Baan Dong Chai community, Mueang district, Lampang province” consists of three objectives. The study aims: 1) to study the qualities of children according to Buddhist teachings, 2) to study the characteristics of good children in Baan Dong Chai community, Mueang district, Lampang province, and 3) to synthesis the roles of good children according to Buddhis teachings in Baan Dong Chai community, Mueang district, Lampang province. This is a qualitative research that was created through documentary research, the in-depth interview and focus group discussion.

The results of the research are as follows:

The qualities of good children consist of: 1) refrain from evil and causes of ruin, 2) behave well with an integrity in body, speech and mind, 3) study diligently and always be active to learn new knowledge in order to develop intelligence, 4) will to put an effort to achieve the goal, 5) live life morally and ethically as the basis of being a good person, 6) maintain oneself as a good heir by managing family’s asset and keep the family stable, and 7) live life in accordance with the Dhamma on Santosha 3 or contentment, namely the contentment with what one gets and deserves to get, the contentment with what is within one’s strength or capacity and the contentment with what is befitting.

The characteristics of good children in Baan Dong Chai community, Mueang district, Lampang province consist of: 1) honesty and gratitude towards parents; sons and daughters should show gratitude by taking care and not neglecting, behave well in bodily, verbally and mind and remember parents’ kindness, 2) tolerance towards the behavior of parents; children should be patient and practice Upekkhā, listen calmly without arguing back, and accept them as they way they were, 3) patience in taking care of parents; children should not speak or complain anything that could hurt them, make them happy and take care of them whether they’re sick or not and not disappoint them, 4) communication with parents; children should use gentle words, not use rude words or loud tone of speaking, and understand their messages, 5) work on behalf of parents; children should willingly help lightening the workload of parents with what one could do, and 6) showing manners to parents; children should be humble, not aggressive or use any rude words towards them and treat them with respect.

The roles of good children according to Buddhist teachings in Baan Dong Chai community, Mueang district, Lampang province consisted of: 1) the roles in treating parents; take care of them with 4 basic needs, always take them to do the merit-making, practice meditation and keep the five precepts, will to assist them with their work, keep the family lineage by behaving well, not lead life towards the causes of ruin, and always make merit for them when they already passed away, 2) communication with parents; always talk with them and check up on them so that they would not feel lonely, support them in both good and bad times, use gentle words with them, make no complaint with them, not make them sad and help them in their work without rejection and any complaint, 3) expression towards parents; show affection and care towards them, help their work with effort and without giving up, be polite and humble, 4) relations with parents; take care of them and not neglect them to be alone, continue and finish their undone work and 5) duty towards parents; take care of their diet and health, apply their teachings in daily life and make merit for them when they already passed away.
